Criminal Investigation Division (CID)
The Criminal Investigations Division (CID) is dedicated to conducting thorough, objective, and professional follow-up investigations of criminal activity within the City of Perry. Our primary goal is to seek the truth, identify suspects, recover stolen property, and build solid cases for successful prosecution.
While patrol officers respond to the initial call for service and secure crime scenes, CID investigators take over complex, specialized, or long-term cases that require extended time and resources.
Areas of Specialization
Our investigators receive advanced training to handle a wide spectrum of criminal activity, categorized into three primary fields:
- Crimes Against Persons: Homicide, robbery, aggravated assault, battery, sexual battery, missing persons, and domestic or family violence.
- Crimes Against Property: Burglary, grand theft, auto theft, economic crimes (fraud, identity theft, scams), arson, and criminal mischief.
- Narcotics Investigations: Street-level drug enforcement, mid-to-major level illicit substance distribution investigations, prescription fraud, and vice-related activity that impacts neighborhood safety and quality of life.
Case Management: The Investigative Process
When a crime is reported, it moves through a structured process to ensure efficiency and accountability. Understanding how a case progresses helps manage expectations during what can be a stressful time.
Step 1: Initial Patrol Report. A patrol officer responds to the scene, takes the initial report, gathers preliminary statements, and collects immediate evidence.
Step 2: Case Assignment & Review. The investigative supervisor reviews the initial report based on “solvability factors”—such as available physical evidence, witness availability, and suspect leads—to determine assignment to an investigator.
Step 3: Follow-Up Investigation. The assigned investigator conducts interviews, processes forensic evidence, executes search warrants, and tracks down leads to identify the offender.
Step 4: Case Disposition. The case is resolved through either an arrest warrant, an exception (such as a victim declining prosecution), or being suspended if all active leads are exhausted.
Step 5: Judicial Prosecution. The investigator compiles the final case file and works directly with the State Attorney’s Office to prepare the case for court proceedings.
